Ordinary Objects

2025 oil paintings
This series evokes the joy of life; it is called "Ordinary Objects." I am working with cabbage, specifically chard, the flavour of which I discovered in Belgium. This subdued icon of ordinariness fascinated artists in the 17th century and has captivated me completely, giving me the chance to hone my observational skills and to idealise the everyday. The humble cabbage is a symbol of hidden beauty. It is simultaneously ostentatious and ordinary. This banal vegetable becomes my symbolic bouquet, which I offer to the figures in my paintings. Why are they hiding behind chard’s subtle beauty? Perhaps it is to allow us to perceive internal beauty, which is more challenging to see at first glance.
